NPA Enhances Police Deployment and Public Safety Measures Following Taipei Knife Attack

The National Police Agency, Ministry of the Interior, Announces Enhanced Preventive and Response Measures Following the Random Knife Attack at the Taipei Metro and Eslite Nanxi Shopping District

In response to an incident that occurred in the early evening of yesterday, the 19th, at Exit M8 of Taipei Main Station MRT and in the Eslite Nanxi shopping district, a suspect surnamed Chang threw smoke devices and carried out a random knife attack, resulting in nine casualties. The National Police Agency immediately notified police agencies nationwide to implement the following preventive and response measures.

1. Increased Police Visibility

Police presence has been increased at mass transit stations and other key locations through enhanced patrols and fixed security posts. Police agencies have reinforced coordination, information sharing and immediate response mechanisms with local police departments and precincts. A total of 1,932 police deployments have been assigned.

2. Strengthened Joint Security Arrangements

In anticipation of major events and increased crowds over the weekend, police are coordinating with venue management personnel and private security staff to reinforce joint security arrangements and enhance public safety. Any illegal or suspicious activity identified is to be reported immediately for appropriate action.

3. Rapid Reporting and Response

The police urge all agencies and members of the public to promptly report any incidents posing a threat to public safety. Upon receiving such reports, police will swiftly deploy personnel to the scene to prevent the situation from escalating.

4. On Site Incident Response

Upon arrival at the scene, police will immediately implement access control and perimeter security measures, stabilize the situation, conduct rescue operations for the injured and apprehend suspects, ensuring effective on site incident handling.

The National Police Agency reaffirms its ongoing efforts in preventive policing and emergency response to maintain public order and safeguard public safety.
