25th Anniversary of Law Enforcement Torch Run in Taipei
On September 8, 2024, in support of public welfare, the National Police Agency (NPA) of the Ministry of the Interior, in collaboration with Special Olympics Chinese Taipei, organized the “25th Anniversary of the Law Enforcement Officers' Torch Run,” coinciding with the 2024 Panasonic Taipei City Run. The event took place in front of the Presidential Office. Chang Jung-Hsin, the Director-General of the NPA, invited Wade Carpenter, the President of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), to participate in the event. Mr. Carpenter contributed to the race by firing the starting gun. This marked the first time in the 25-year history of the Torch Run that the IACP President joined the event, highlighting his recognition of the professionalism and public service commitment of Taiwan police.

Director-General Chang emphasized the numerous benefits of sports. Since taking office, he has been emphasizing the importance of health and leisure activities for his colleagues. He has also been deeply dedicated to public service and actively encouraging his team to participate in such activities. Through sports, the Law Enforcement Torch Run stands out as an excellent way to help individuals with intellectual disabilities build self-confidence and engage with the community. Director-General Chang expressed gratitude for Mr. Carpenter’s visit to Taiwan, hoping it would foster collaboration between local police and the international community, not only in public welfare activities but also in combating crime.

In his speech, Mr. Carpenter thanked the NPA for the invitation. He acknowledged the dedication of Taiwan police to public service and their passionate support for the Law Enforcement Torch Run, an event he has participated in since 1999. This year’s celebration is especially significant, marking 25 years of support for Special Olympics athletes. Over the past 5 years, Taiwan has played a vital role in the Special Olympics, with local police demonstrating their commitment to global solidarity by actively participating in the Special Olympics Torch Relay each year.
